Can refeeding syndrome happen after starving?

I read about something called refeeding syndrome where reintroducing calories too quickly after malnutrition can cause death. If you eat 1200 or less calories for a significant time and get very lean ie.10-12%bf and a low bmi can you die from this if you go back to maintenance calories too quickly?
