Maharashtra: Woman delivers baby on running bus; newborn dies after couple throws him out
Maharashtra: 19-year-old woman gives birth on bus, throws baby out window; police investigate tragic incident in Maharashtra.
A 19-year-old woman and her 21-year-old partner were arrested in Maharashtra's Parbhani for allegedly throwing their newborn baby, delivered onboard a moving bus, out of the window.
The baby died, police confirmed.
The incident occurred around 6:30 am on Tuesday and the accused have been identified as Ritika Dhere and Altaf Shaikh, who were travelling from Pune to Parbhani.
According to police, the two were in an inter-caste relationship and had been living together. The woman went into labour during the bus journey and gave birth onboard. Upon reaching the outskirts of Pathri, the couple allegedly decided to discard the newborn.
The couple said they dumped the newborn as they were unable to raise the child, he said, adding that the baby died after being thrown on the road.
A fellow female passenger, who witnessed the incident, immediately alerted the police. Acting swiftly, officers intercepted the bus in Parbhani and detained the accused.
A case has been registered at Pathri police station under Sections 94(3) and 94(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) pertaining to the concealment of birth by secret disposal of a dead body.
The woman has been admitted to Parbhani Government Hospital for treatment, while the man remains in police custody.
