COLD WATER IMMERSION (CWI) MEGATHREAD
This thread will go over the range of physical and mental benefits to cold showers and CWI

Cold showers are a very easy change you can make to your routine and can be swapped out for hot showers that you would normally have, this thread may be obvious to some but for those that have extremely hot showers, stop.
Cold showers are also high T JFL.
Frequent hot showers can decrease sperm count and therefore testosterone so this is a massive looksmin

Humans have been having essentially "cold showers" or been doing cold water therapy for thousands or years as people like Hippocrates promoted the pros of cold water on improving health. The "Father of Medicine," advocated for cold water therapy in ancient Greece (circa 400 BC) to balance bodily humors and treat various ailments, including fever, joint pain, digestive issues, and fatigue.
People like Wim Hof have also promoted this. He has the Wim Hof method (WHM) which includes
- after the last exhale, hold your breath for 20 seconds
- repeat 3 or 4 time but increase the time that you hold your breath exponentially
- this can improve tolerance to cold and reduce stress and therefore cortisol levels plateau boyo

1. Circulatory function and recovery

The shock that you feel when entering a cold shower is kicking the thermoregulatory center (hypothalamus) and you circulatory system into high power, which makes blood vessels near your skin undergo vasoconstriction which stimulates blood flow to vital organs and muscles to allow for greater respiration which reduces inflammation in tissue after exercise and weight bearing. This is very important for recovery for gymcels to reduce doms
Cold water therapy can also reduce muscle pains and soreness as it can reduce the speed of transition in neurons which provides relief
Metabolic rate also increases by around 350% in whilst the body tries to regulate temperature
- Reduced Soreness: A 2023 study in the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness found that a 3-minute cold shower (15°C) within 30 minutes post-workout significantly reduced delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) over the following 48 hours.

2. Skin health

Your skin is an organ so take care of it. Cold shocks from a shower tightens pores which keeps out dirt to reduce acne and sores and the increased blood flow from the skin in vasoconstriction to internal organs clears out toxins. Cold water therapy can increase collagen production and regulate sebum production which can give better health indicators in the skin. The cold water can preserve essential; oils in the skin which can reduce irritation. Additionally, as pores dilate, this can give the skin a tighter polish and look. - You can also use an ice cube or "roller" on the skin as it has the same or even better effect
Overall the norepinephrine boosted production keeps sebum under control which reduces ageing in the face, eg. reducing wrinkles
A 2009 study found that cooling the skin via cold showers significantly helped counter intense itchiness caused by psoriasis, while other evidence suggests cold water strengthens skin contractile fibers to improve firmness and temporarily close pores to reduce pollution ingress
10 benefits of cold water showering
Research on the benefits of cold water therapy has been found to provide a myriad of benefits when it comes to skincare, haircare, tiredness, weight loss and even fertility.

3. mental health and wellbeing

Cold showers can be a very good way of maintaining good mental health and stability. They can make you more attentive and have more energy for throughout the day. As i referenced earlier, the Wim Hof method can reduce stress and combat symptoms of depression. The shock to cold water activates the bodies "fight or Flight response" through the adrenal gland. Adrenaline and noradrenaline is released, which therefore increases blood flow to the brain, making you feel invigorated and awake. Neurotransmitters such as the norepinephrine's are released which are involved in attention and mood regulation. All these factors will grant you a better nights sleep and more REM.
Neurochemical Boost: Exposure to cold stimulates the central nervous system, significantly increasing blood levels of noradrenaline (by up to 530%) and dopamine (by up to 250%)

4. Immunity/immune system

Having cold showers may even protect you from viruses such as the common cold. The CWI shock can promote white blood cells, lymphocytes, to combat infection. Families on colder countries leave their babies in the cold to improve their immune systems and resilience to cold.
One study in the Netherlands found that people who switched to cold showers for 30, 60, or 90 seconds for 90 days called out sick from work 29% less than people who didn’t switch to cold showers.

6 cold shower benefits to consider
A cold shower can have benefits including pain relief and a mood boost. Learn how just a few minutes of cold therapy during your shower might be good for you.
The increased metabolism due to the increased work of the hypothalamus will make you "bun fat" much faster. It activates "brown fat" which burns calories to produce heat to keep the body stable in negative feedback.

5. Hair health

If you have waves/curls like me, having cold showers can massively improve appearance and follicle health (still great with straight hair kek) as it can reduce frizz as it can lock in moisture by allowing the hair follicle to lay flat. Hot water can damage the scalp and make it dry by removing essential oils. Steam from a hot shower can be beneficial but this is not the topic of the thread. Hot water strips the scalp of sebum which can make your hair greasy much faster as the scalp overreacts and produces too much oils. It allows separate waves/curls or hairs in general to separate hairs and reduces split ends.
Thank you for reading thread boyos, i put effort into this
Stay cold and healthy buddyboyos
