The more competent you are at a task, the greater your confidence, I can attest to this in my day to day life. In BJJ I am everyone's bitch, and get my ass kicked. As a result, I am very low in the social hierarchy, while no one hates me and everyone is super helpful, friendly and encouraging to me - it's mostly because I am young, polite and friendly.
Now compare it to my judo class where I am one of the better students/pretty high up compared to everyone else. I hold WAAAAAAAAAY more authority, I get respect on a different level from everyone, the lower belts - even if they height and weight mog me and are older, still talk to me in a way they see me as an authority. I'm more confident, and am high up in the social hierarchy.
The difference? Competence. Your competence is your confidence, if you work a shit job and live paycheck to paycheck, you will NEVER be confident.
