Coconut Oil Guide
Coconut oil is one of the few vegetable oils that is 96% saturated fatty acids (most are polyunsaturated). It also contains a large amount of short- and medium-chain triglycerides. Peat said that short-chain fatty acids can enter the mitochondria for oxidation without using the carnitine transport system to the same extent as long-chain fats. This means that coconut oil is a better energy source for mitochondria because it simply oxidizes faster in cells, supporting metabolism, reducing PUFA oxidation, and improving thyroid function.To support his claims, Peat cites an animal experiment:
The animals were divided into four groups:
- Those who received coconut oil
- Those who received unsaturated fatty acids
- A mixture
- Different total fat levels
Besides the experiment, he also cites his own experience as an example. While this isn't scientific data, it's still worth mentioning:
"When I first tried coconut oil, I immediately noticed a reaction that convinced me that my metabolism was chronically slowed by something that was easily compensated for by 'dilution' or molecular competition. I added a tablespoon of coconut oil to my rice for dinner, and half an hour later, while reading, I noticed I was breathing deeper than usual. I saw my skin turn pink, and I noticed my heart rate had increased to around 98 beats per minute."
He says he lost weight from 84 to 79 kilograms in six months of taking coconut oil, without changing his diet.
Now let's move on to the practical part. How coconut oil can help us specifically, my observations, how to eat properly, etc.
I use coconut oil during my cutting phase; it really helps minimize the symptoms of malnutrition: fatigue, chills (cold hands and feet), drowsiness, low immunity, low mood, and decreased metabolism.
I attribute this to Peat's claim that coconut oil helps the body oxidize existing PUFAs. Considering that the composition of fat tissue depends on the type of fat we eat (i.e., if you eat vegetable oil, your body fat will be unsaturated; if you eat saturated fat, it will be saturated; and most of our diet consists of PUFAs), coconut oil can literally help us oxidize our own existing body fat and extract more energy from it.
I recommend (from personal experience) spreading your coconut oil consumption throughout the day to ensure your body is consistently receiving all the nutrients it needs. I prefer to take it like this: one teaspoon with breakfast, another three hours later at lunch (breakfast is usually super light), then two on its own, without food, and the last one at dinner. A total of 4-5 teaspoons comes out to 20-25 grams per day.
You can add it to coffee, cottage cheese, fry anything with it (eggs, potatoes), or add it to rice. In principle, you shouldn't have any problems incorporating it into your diet, considering you can eat it plain, it's delicious.
If you can't find coconut oil in the store, and you probably won't, you can order on any marketplace. It's not expensive.
Which one should you choose? I use cold-pressed extra virgin. Technically, its benefits should work even in the refined, processed version, because its benefits come from its structure, which isn't altered by processing. But I'd still recommend not experimenting, at least the first time, so go with extra virgin. Keep in mind, Peat said coconut oil is even suitable for deep-frying, so even KFC chicken could be beneficial, lol. But I haven't tested that.
