Aside from one Syrian who mistook me for Indian - or Pakistani as he admitted seconds later, only 10% of people correctly guess me as Pakistani. 90% of the guesses are: Moroccan, Turkish, Iranian, Kurdish, Afghan, Syrian, Iraqi or simply "Arabic." I personally don't see it. The weirdest one I got was South American/Latino. It's weird because there are no South Americans living here. I got that not once, but twice. I also got Bengali once, that was weird too. Somehow, Pakistanis in the Netherlands sometimes also mistake me for being non-Pakistani. A Moroccan brother at the Pakistani mosque, which is filled with Pakistanis, thought I wasn't Pakistani either. In Pakistan, sometimes they ask me if I am Iranic or if I am Afghan. I don't know why. You'd think native Pakistanis would at least know better. One Iranic person in Pakistan thought I was Kashmiri. I said no, obviously. A few weeks later, I found out the paternal side of the family immigrated centuries ago from the disputed Jammu and Kashmir region to where my family lives now. So hats off to that Iranic dude for his knowledge, I'm mirin. The maternal side of my family has no history of migration. I'm Indic-speaking but I'm not a Punjabi either. But I will never LARP as a non-Pakistani because I'm a proud Pakistani. I don't know why there's a meme going on claiming that Pakistanis claim to be Arab/Persian/Afghan because I don't know any Pakistani who's guilty of this either. Not a single one. We are all proud Pakistanis. So stop perpetuating this meme, duderinos. It's yikes.

I can think of only few instances and most were weird as shit. Some SEA hookups saying I look Indian but somehow too good looking to be like the moneylenders and scammers that are common there. Being 'brown' is truly the most diverse colour. You could get mistaken for anything depending on your location and the most popular brown ethnicity in that location. Many people are just ignorant and they haven't seen enough people from different countries in order to distinguish. This is why we're all lumped in with people of different ethnicities - even if we feel offended to be called that. Pakistans won't like to be called Indians and vice verse. Most people here, despite talking about race 24/7 don't know either - they think a clear Iranian (Nazanin Boniadi) is a curry.

Yeah I’ve seen your pictures. Personally I think you look Moroccan since you don’t look Turkish. When it comes to ethnics in the NL, it’s either Turkish or Moroccan and I can easily guess between these two. However thanks to the influx of Syrian refugees, the demographics have changed. Outside you will now see not only Syrians but also Palestinians. I met a few at the vocational school I studied. Got along with them quite well, even the Christian ones. I don’t think you look Pakistani at all. Yes there’s lighter Pakistanis but they have a different look to them. I guess I know better because they are my fellow Pakistanis but sometimes there’s also Pakistanis that I would have mistaken for Afghans instead. Especially when they have pale skin to go along with it. Although, to be fair, there’s a genetic overlap between Afghans and Pakistanis in the western part of the country. Afghanistan’s largest ethnic group and Pakistan’s second largest ethnic group are the same albeit their group isn’t a monolithic one and they have different points of origin, hence why they’re so shrouded in mystery but when you know what I know then you’ll realize there’s nothing mysterious about it. I did meet an Afghan a few days ago whom I thought was Turkish and when he said he was Afghan I assumed he was Hazara or Uzbek whom are the peoples with vertically narrow eyes generally speaking. I was surprised to find out he actually belonged to the largest ethnic group. He definitely did not look like it at all.

I don’t think I’ve ever been mistaken for a refugee except for once in the tram and she was a so-called Hindoestaan aka curry. Yeah I’m also nothing like the ethnics here. Dutch, if I remember correctly. I have met very few Afghans overall so I don't know if most of them would think the same thing. Most ethnics where I grew up were Moroccans, Turks or Somalis, we didn't have many 'exotic' ethnics like in the big cities.

Interesting. I think they have a certain look to them so I am easily able to spot them when I see them or I could confuse them for being Pakistani. Surprising you grew up with Somalis, the only one I met was in high school and he was only a classmate for a year before going to England. Definitely tons of Moroccans and Turks though.
