I wouldnt say its entirely subjective. the way pheno contrasts and reveals shadows and tones in the skin isnt really subjective. but some part it isSo how do babies instinctively recognize and prefer an 'attractive' face?

Only pheno hierarchy as far as looks are concerned is subjective. What pheno is considered attractive has changed throughout history.
Babies know about beautiful faces (i.e. BONES) the moment they're out from the womb. But they learn about which pheno is attractive and which one isn't later on through mass media and watching the pheno preferences of their parents and others in the household.
