Do Bone grafts prevent bone loss after tooth extraction ?

Went to the dentist and he said my lower molar on the right side has been pretty infected and needs to be extracted. It was my fault since i had a cavity there since childhood but didnt really give a shit about it when was I was a kid. I'm thinking if getting a bone graft could prevent bone loss from extracting it.
