I believe they always have some kind of meaning, though it's not always possible to understand them 100%. Sometimes it's just something stupid or obvious, like dreaming of getting hacked or having my home invaded being obviously related to my fear of vulnerability and such, but in other instances they are much more incoherent and almost impossible to comprehend. I often dream of still images and/or environments that evoke a particular set of emotions that usually relate to a specific event or time in my life, so then the object of the dream is not the visual part itself but the emotional atmosphere it creates that relates to the memory.
Also remember dreaming about killing yellow spiders around my house a couple days ago.
