Do I need to wrap a hammer with cloth for bonesmashing?

Title. Is it necessary to use some fabric/rag over the hammer head to avoid fractures, or can I just hit bare metal? Im aiming for zygos and ramus.

As long as you are still getting the same bruising then a cloth is good it reduces brain damage and less pain so you can go for longer
