(I capitalized existence because that's only the way it is when we're talking about the sheer existence of a god, you can certainly use the bad stuff that happens thing when discussing a personal god that cares for humans). Yeah they just do this shit because there is not a single defendable reason that god is more likely to exist than to have been made up, it is just as defendable as the tooth fairy. The only somewhat decent arguement is "you cant prove it doesnt exist" this however also doesnt work because if something is not proven to exist then the only logical conclusion is to assume it does not exist, innocent until proven guilty. I don't believe in god, but I want that there would be one. Modern humanity is fucking lost, all that matters now more than ever is consuming, power, money, fame and sex. All that bullshit will only bring emptiness to your being. We are all part of the rat race, always seeking something new to satiate our needs.

What's the point of becoming a millionaire, fucking dozens of stacys, being famous... if all that in the end won't bring you fulfillment. Religion, meditation, a life of tranquility, contemplation, nature... all that will bring you inner peace.
