Better alternative that keeping them locked up, prisons are just overall a bad punishment. Too expensive, and deterrence is minimal.
Small crimes should be community service/fines, medium crimes should be public whipping, high crimes should be death penalty.

Morally: the state shouldn’t have the power to kill when errors are inevitable

you're right, but ideally people should not stay decades on death row. i see no benifit in it
