I've read too many books on evolutionary psychology and I can't change my world view by much, im too aware of others animalistic and automatic behaviours and where they trace back to. I truly want to believe that we have "free will" and a higher purpose but its not happening.

what got you becoming more religious?

Short version.

I find the Christian paradigm (I mainly dabble in orthodoxy so I can't speak on other sects) to be quite antithetical to the bullshit of modern society and the modern world, in a sense that I even many people here who hold classic incel ideas can relate to. That initially made it quite appealing to me. I think a lot of the secularist mindset nowadays can be attributed to intentional media poisoning by the "powers that be", or whatever.
The notion that atheism is simply just the hard truth you need to swallow feels like a deliberate ploy. I believe many of the soyence beliefs are founded in just as much faith as belief in god, but it just happens to be branded as a more "intellectual" position.

I'm looking more into the epistemic side to it currently. Quite a novice at the moment to all this, to be fair.

I did 5-MeO-DMT, which dissolved all space-time structure and the observer from reality.
The closest description of what I experienced was God: pure infinite being, absolute unity, the substrate underneath existence itself.

The experience felt like direct contact with the very fabric from which reality, consciousness, and existence emerge.

Before the trip, I was already a spiritual person and was never a materialist-reductionist atheist type anyway.
I was already interested in consciousness, metaphysics, non-duality, symbolism, etc., but it was mostly mental models in my head.

My DMT experience changed it from abstraction into direct experience.
Now, I no longer see God as some old man in the sky (this idea never resonated with me anyway), and the experience itself made it feel more like consciousness itself is fundamental, and that individuality/separation is something layered on top of a deeper unified reality.

Now I understand spiritual traditions much better. Ego death, unity with God, enlightenment, etc., are all part of different cultures that point to the same underlying thing through different symbols and stories.

If anything, it made me understand why religions and mystical traditions emerged in the first place.

I don’t follow a specific religion as I’m more interested in the mystical core beneath religions than in the man-made institutions themselves.

I do resonate with Buddhism, esoteric Christianity, Gnosticism, and some others. Ideas like karma, reincarnation, ego death, spiritual evolution, and unity consciousness all resonate very much with me.

And I believe consciousness is fundamental/what we actually are, while individual identity is a temporary configuration within it.
So I believe that after death, consciousness continues in some form, because at the deepest level, I don’t think we are separate from existence itself.

What made my DMT experience feel fundamentally different is that it stripped away content itself. There were no visions, entities, narratives, or hallucinations. The entire structure of subject/object separation collapsed.

And interestingly, some of these ideas also seem to echo in mathematics and physics in ways I find hard to ignore, but that’s a much deeper rabbit hole.
