or does it simply put you back to your natural skintone prior to damage?
 
would it not remove the tan/sun damage making you appear paler?
It promotes the formation of collagen and skin cell turnover which will make keratin based hyperpigmentation go away quicker than it would normally but it won't increase or decrease the amount of melanin in your body or to wherever you apply it.
