Depressive Suicidal Black Metal - a genre of metal that, despite being in the "black metal" subgenre, actually has barely anything to do with black metal in general.
It strips away the entire premise of black metal and replaces it with lo-fi, reverb based music and one of the greatest guitar performances I've heard.
DSBM came as a byproduct of Norwegian Black Metal way back in the 90s. But instead of pointing the aggression outwards - with satanism and such - it pointed it inwards.
The main bands that helped the genre grow and become what it is today (mainly in 2000-2010) were key bands like
Xasthur
Lifelover
Hypothermia
Nocturnal Depression
Make a Change.. Kill Yourself
The entire sub-genre is based on nihilism, hopelessness and isolation. It's not meant to be hype like other metal genres, it's meant to be depressive like the name suggests, and it succeeds at that excellently.
I've never been filled with raw emotion from music, as much as i have been from listening to DSBM. Ever since early 2020 when i discovered the genre, to even today, there wasn't a single second where i wasn't amazed by the beautiful composing of DSBM tracks.
It's not just music, it feels like the instruments themselves are speaking to you, speaking pure and raw emotions - emotions of existential dread and self hatred.
You feel the music deep inside you, every track feels like the final track before your life comes to an end. It's beautiful and poetic.
