Because "indian" isn't actual a real identity found in any point in time in history before the brits established it when they started colonizing parts of south asia.

India is literally like Italy in the way that there is no such thing as an Italian race, just a collective groups of people that live on the Italian peninsula. Ask any Italian what I'm talking about and if are v aware of their own history they'll know what I'm talking about.

My own grandma who was born in 1922 in the Hyderabad State, refused to ever call herself "indian" up until the last day of her life, even after it was militarily annexed into the Indian union and only ever referred to herself as being Hyderabadi or being from Hyderabad.
