1. A variety of colours in eye and hair is pretty much unique to Europeans. There are some micro exceptions among the Yukhagir in eastern siberia, the central australian aboriginals and Western canadian Inuits. But it's only as diverse among europeans. Also eye color is independent to pigmentation in skin, so not an adaptation to the lack of sunlight.
2. This type of diversity in hair and eye colors can be found in birds, and are due to sexual selection. Female birds find unique colours that stand out sexy and choose to mate with males with unique colors and patterns.
3. Human hunter gatherers have largely been monogamous throughout history, hence why there is so little sexual dimorphism between humans, sexual selection has not been very prevalent throughout human evolution.
4. Sexual selection intensified in areas where there was an imbalance in the sex ratio. When humans arrived to Europe during the ice age, Europe was a hostile steppe-tundra with saber-toothed predators and mammoths that you had to travel far to kill and were dangerous as hell. Food was scarce, the mortality for young men was high and a man could only afford to feed one woman and a few children, women were highly dependent on their man as they couldn't gather shit from the desert cold ground where not much grew.
5. Women in Europe therefore had to compete for men and men preferred to mate with women who had unique hair and eye colors. The shittier the weather gets in Europe, the more diversity in hair and eye colors we find.
6. Conclusion: northeastern european men died often and couldn't feed many people tens of thousands of years ago, so northeastern european women had to compete for the men, hence why baltic and Russian men are so ugly and baltic and Russian women are so sexy.
