- Improved coloring
- Striking feature itself
2. The science behind eyelashes
Every person naturally has 150–200 lashes on their upper eyelids and 75–100 on their lower eyelids. Lash length, thickness, and color can vary from person to person.
Growth phases of eyelashes
The first phase, the anagen phase, is the active growth phase when lashes grow to their predetermined length. This phase typically lasts 30–45 days.
Once the lashes reach their full length, they enter the catagen phase, a transitional stage where the hair follicle begins to shrink. This phase lasts for about 2–3 weeks.
The telogen phase is the resting phase, lasting 3–4 months. During this time, a new lash starts to grow within the follicle, eventually pushing out the old lash as the new cycle begins.
3. Myths about growing lashes
Myth 1: Plucking lashes makes them grow thicker.
Fact: This is simply not true. Plucking lashes can damage the hair follicle and can lead to permanent hair loss.
Myth 2: Cutting lashes grows them faster.
Fact: The growth of the lashes happens inside the follicle, not on the outside. Cutting the lashes won't make them grow faster.
Myth 3: Mascara can help lashes grow.
Fact: Mascara itself doesn’t stimulate lash growth. However, some mascaras are infused with ingredients like vitamins or peptides that may support lash health and encourage growth over time.
4. Hormonal profile
Your hormonal profile and genetic predisposition determine how long your lashes can grow, with environmental factors also playing a supporting role.
Here are some of the hormones affecting the lash-growth:
- Estrogen: Topical creams containing estradiol and estriol can enhance the growth of the lashes. @Clavicular is currently using it as part of his skincare-routine and to combat hair loss.
- Thyroid hormones: Check your thyroid hormone levels (T3 and T4). Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can lead to hair loss.
- Growth hormone: You can boost GH levels through peptides like CJC-1295 with DAC, Ipamorelin, MK-677 or synthetic HGH itself.
- IGF-1: Has the same benefits as GH, prolonging the anagen phase.
5. Lash health
Optimizing the health of your lashes is essential for longer lashes. This can be achieved through various approaches:
- Sleep: Optimized sleep is the foundation for everything.
- Diagnosing health conditions: Certain health conditions like hypothyroidism can negatively impact lash growth.
- Diet and nutrition: More about this later.
- Minimizing Make-Up use: Overuse of mascara and other products could lead to shedding.
- Reducing inflammation and dryness: General moisturization of the skin is beneficial for lash health.
6. Nutrition and diet
Diet plays a big role in growing and maintaining long and healthy lashes.
Try to focus on nutrients that promote collagen production, decrease inflammation and oxidative stress and that generally positively modulate the skin microbiome.
Vitamins: Vitamin A, B7, C, E and K.
Minerals: Copper, zinc, magnesium, selenium and manganese.
Additional compounds: Alpha lipoic acid, CoQ10, glutathione, Omega-3 fatty acids, curcumin and beta-carotene.
7. Methods for longer, denser lashes
Now that you have an understanding of the basics, let's dive into the real growth-enhancing methods. I will rate each method on a scale of 1-5.
Oils 5-15$
Oils are a good natural way to achieve longer eyelashes. The best oils are castor oil, peppermint oil and rosemary oil. Coconut oil is also really great for the eyelashes and overall skin. Oils take some time to work as with many softmaxxes, but they do work. 4/5.
Latisse 50-200$
Latisse may seem like a viable option to grow the lashes fast and long. It unfortunately nukes the fat around the eye area. This makes it an bad option. It's on you if you want to risk that permanent fat change. 1/5.
Serums 10-50$
Serums work great, but if you decide to stop using them like with most of the methods you loose all your progress. 3/5.
The Ordinarys Multi-Peptide Lash and Brow Serum 15$
This is a cheap option but works great according to some customer reviews.
OLAPLEX Lashbond Building Serum 50$
This serum is more expensive but also works great.
Oral Minoxidil 20-40$
Promotes hair growth everywhere on the body which is also it's own main contra-argument. It increases blood flow to the hair follicle and helps nourish it, that's why its so effective. It could cause heart palpitations and low blood pressure. That can be solved by using a lower dose. Dosages vary from 0.5-5mg. I would recommend starting with a lower dosage and upping the dosage slowly to your preferred range. 4.5/5.
Topical Minoxidil 20-40$
Minoxidil shouldn't be applied near the eyes, but the topical Minoxidil from the scalp or eyebrows can go systemic and influence the bloodflow to the lashes too, promoting their hair growth. This could have a synergistic effect in combination with the oral Minoxidil on lash growth. 2/5.
GHK-Cu 50-100$
GHK-Cu can and will grow your eyelashes too. The study data is limited on this so I couldn't include an B&A in context of eyelash growth. It has no documented real risks. 4/5. @NZb6Air
MSM 15-30$
There is only anecdotal evidence that MSM grows eyelashes. My good friend @mrmogger2882 tried it out and experienced good eyelash growth. 3.5/5.
8. Lash extensions 100-150$
If growing lashes isn't an option, this procedure can be a great alternative.
Lash extensions are small fibers bonded to the natural lashes with a specialized adhesive. They are a good way to fraud longer lashes and vary in texture depending on the material used for the fibers. Don't get too much done or it can look bad.
The optimal density for extensions is 1:1 or lower. Be clear about what results you want.
9. Eyelash transplant surgery 2.5k-6k$
Should only be the last option as it's invasive like any other surgery and really expensive. The surgery involves taking hair follicles from a donor area on the body and implanting them into the lash line.
10. Eyelash tinting 5-10$
Now that we know how to grow them to a desired length via many methods, we can focus on improving our eyelashes even more.
Dyeing the eyelashes is an important step for all light-colored lashes and can ascend them by a lot.
This can improve their perceived density and make them look more striking. Don't forget to dye your eyebrows as well.
11. Eyelash curling 5-20$
This is an affordable method to make your eyelashes appear longer, it simply involves using an eyelash curler daily on each eye. After curling, applying Vaseline can help prolong the curl and keep the lashes in place throughout the day.
12. Lash lift 20-40$
A lash lift enhances your natural eyelashes by lifting and curling them, creating the appearance of longer lashes without the need for eyelash extensions or daily curling. This procedure can be done at a beauty salon or at home using a DIY kit.
13. Frauding positive canthal tilt
This can be done by cutting the outer lower part of the eyelashes crossing the lateral canthus.
14. Make-Up
Mascara: Makes the lashes appear darker, denser and also longer. It can be a quick softmaxx. 5-30$
Kohl: This can make the lashes appear denser and enhance the eye area overall if applied correctly along the lash line. 5-20$
