Kofi sat on the porch of his home in Abidjan, watching the heat shimmer off the asphalt. He had spent months saving up for a golden necklace to gift to Amara for her birthday, imagining the bright smile that usually lit up her face whenever they spent time together.
That evening, when he walked over to her house, he found the front door ajar. Inside sat Amara, completely entranced by the glowing screen in front of her. Next to her was a guy in a hoodie, leaning over to show her a set of complex controls on a mechanical keyboard.
"Amara?" Kofi called out gently.
She barely looked up. "Oh, hey Kofi. This is Gamer," she said, nodding casually toward the guy next to her.
Gamer didn't say a word. Gamer simply adjusted his headset, executed a flawless combo on the controller, and handed it over to Amara, who cheered in delight as her character flashed victory across the monitor.
Over the next few weeks, Kofi tried everything. He invited Amara to walk along the beach at Grand-Bassam, offered to take her out for alloco at their favorite local spot, and brought her fresh flowers from the market. But every single time, Gamer was already there. Gamer was sitting on the couch. Gamer was sharing headphones. Gamer was setting high scores.
Eventually, Kofi realized he couldn't compete. The last time he went to visit, Amara barely noticed him entering the room—she was too busy laughing at something Gamer had typed into a chat window.
