So you will often hear people say that a recessed Maxilla causes nasolabial folds using images like this:
I believe that this is a category error because funnily enough the girl on the right has a LESS PROJECTED upper maxilla what she has rather is deeper set eyes a slightly more projected nose and a more projected lower maxilla and jaw this is what she looks like on front btw:
Notice how the lips and nose protrude and make the cheekbones look flat in comparison. When people talk about MAXILLA they are often talking about nostril position, where your nostrils start compared to your brow ridge. It is feasible that two people have the same nose yet one looks like a birdcel and not the other simply because of nostril position.
So where do nasolabial folds come from do you ask? From the relationship between nostril position and cheekbone protrusion.
What happens is that when cheekbones are forward they will push the fat pads forward also either naturally or with aging this will cause the fat pads to sag and create the folds obviously very low set cheekbones can create this too it's a multicausal phenomenon.
You can see an example of very forward and low set cheekbones on Candace Owens:
To compare I have never had nasolabial folds and my maxilla is very flat:
