Whenever I go to lectures of 500 people I can either easily sit next to someone I already know or what I usually like to do is spot 1-3 girls sitting together and sit next to her, get to know her, and if she's hot get her instagram and go from there. If she's not hot, you now have met another person that you will say hello to, the next time you see her.

In the gym I often just ask if someone can spot me, how many sets they have left or if I can jump in and do some sets. If the vibe is right you can start doing small talk about how long they have been training, what split they train, compliment their strength like woah 140kg thats crazy damn whatever. Have high energy and confidence. I know people who literally see someone benching in the gym and shout "CMON YOU GOT IT" across the entire gym like a fucking chad. For example I saw some black dude do an abs exercise next to me (he was an absolute unit) and I just asked him what that exercise is for and he yapped to me how important training abs and having a strong legs is for 10 minutes straight. And now I basically get in the gym and know like half the people and greet each other. The people that I would like to be friends with I exchanged contact information with. Then you can start inviting them to a gym session together or do something completely outside of the gym to actually become good friends.
