I am really tired of explaining this over and over to people tbh, humans don't base their PERCEPTIONS of average on what the true average is. Its always inflated one way or another. Think I'm wrong? The same applies to all things. If I had to estimate what most people's perceptions are, I would say 5'9 and below is short, or you have a good chance of being perceived as short by many people. 5'10-6ish is average height. 6'1+ is tall. 5'7 is 100%, certainly short.
Also think about intelligence. The first standard deviation for intelligence puts you at 115 IQ. Is that smart? No, that's laughable and most people perceive it that way.

another factor that i think is being overlooked in this whole thread is one of location. being in california, there is a lot of hispanic influence which makes seeing guys that are even shorter than 5'7 a norm. i don't know where you're located but i have seen some study that shows that california on average is one of the shortest states in the US.

Yeah you and I aren't in disagreement. I've covered the "normal" vs "short" difference like 3 times now I'm not going to say it again.
I live in the Midwest. Its like 80-90% white or some shit. I get called tall quite often at 6'3 but my friends who are 6'1 are not called tall. 5'9 people have been called short here.
The regionality/perception difference is a part of my argument. People's perceptions are formed partly by the heights they perceived around them, but humans are biased as hell in their observations and extremely bad at statistics when it comes to their inner heuristics which @AbandonShip doesn't seem to be able to accept.
