genes are everything

people on org love arguing about whether genetics matter, but honestly the argument is a lot simpler than people make it sound.

genes are the foundation of basically everything you are.

before you ever made a decision, went to the gym, changed your hairstyle, learned a skill or developed a personality, you already had a biological blueprint influencing how you would turn out. you didn't choose your height, your facial structure, your natural body proportions, your hair characteristics, your baseline athletic potential, or a huge number of other traits. you were born with them.

that's why genetics can be such a brutal topic.

two people can have similar lifestyles and completely different results. one person can naturally be tall, naturally muscular, have favorable proportions and recover quickly from training, while another person can work just as hard and never have the same potential. effort matters, obviously, but effort doesn't erase biological differences.

even things people like to call purely “hard work” have a genetic component. muscle growth, strength, endurance, coordination and recovery aren't identical between individuals. personality and temperament also have heritable components. intelligence and many cognitive traits are influenced by both genetics and environment. basically, the more you look into human biology, the harder it becomes to draw a clean line between “born with it” and “developed it.”

and then there is development.

your genes don't just affect what you look like at birth. they influence how your body develops over time. puberty, growth, skeletal development, hormone regulation and countless other biological processes are influenced by genetics.

this is why the idea that everyone has exactly the same potential if they simply “work hard enough” doesn't make much sense.

hard work can help you get closer to your own potential.

it cannot guarantee that your potential is identical to someone else's.

that's the distinction people constantly miss.

someone with average genetics can still become impressive through discipline and consistency. someone with exceptional genetics can waste their potential completely. environment matters. habits matter. education matters. training matters.

but none of those things remove genetics from the equation.

if anything, they make the genetic component more interesting.

your environment interacts with what you inherited. the same environment can produce different results in different people because people don't start from identical biological conditions.

so when people say “genes aren't everything,” they're technically right.

but when people act like genetics are some tiny irrelevant factor that can simply be overcome with enough motivation, they're also coping.

you cannot choose your starting point.

you cannot choose your parents.

you cannot choose your genetic potential.

what you can choose is how close you get to whatever potential you were given.

that's probably the most realistic way to look at it.

genetics set a huge part of the playing field.

your environment and behavior determine how you play on it.

and pretending either side doesn't matter is just an oversimplification.

genes aren't literally everything, but they are the foundation underneath an enormous amount of what makes you, you. @Vrilltrum @Regret @socio

It also kind of saddens me that people live their lives convinced that they will make it in life. But the reality is that some people are just destined to stay at the bottom of the barrel societal wise. Not everyone is predisposed to becoming great.

Water. L low effort thread.

Good thread. It's done and dusted for most the second their subhuman parents had sex that gloomy doomed night.
