I’m likely getting MARPE/MSE soon because my nasal pathways are extremely narrow, and my dentist recommended looking into expansion.

For anyone who has had MARPE/MSE:

  • How painful was it actually?
  • What does it feel like during the expansion?
  • Can you actually feel anything when the mid-palatal suture separates?
  • What was the recovery like?
  • Did you notice any changes in nasal breathing?
  • How long did the uncomfortable part last?
  • Did anyone notice changes in their facial structure/cheekbone area afterward?

I’ve also read that expansion can potentially affect the midface/zygomatic area, so I’m curious about people’s actual experiences versus what you see online.

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through it, especially if you had it as a teenager.

I had a palate expander when I was like 12-13 and it genuinely saved my face. I actually developed somewhat of a midface it used to be super recessed due to my mouthbreathing.
It’s pretty painful but you’ll get used to it

Yeah, see, I had a palate expander growing up too, probably around the same age, and I remember it being pretty uncomfortable/painful. But looking into it more now, I’m realizing that it mainly shifted my teeth rather than actually opening up the mid-palatal suture and producing much skeletal expansion.

During my orthodontic consultation they also mentioned that some types of expansion/treatment can potentially interfere with development depending on how they’re done. He even said my deviated septum could possibly be related to my previous treatment, although obviously there’s no way to know for sure.

That’s why I’m hoping the MARPE can actually address some of the skeletal/nasal issues this time around rather than just moving the teeth.
