This might be good for some youngcels. For any of you that dropped out and don't wanna go to uni / don't know what you wanna do etc these could be a decent way into a good field

Google recently released a series of career certificates on:

- Project management
- UX design
- Data analytics
- Android development

I'm doing the data analytics one and i can say its pretty good so far and packed with useful stuff.andy thing to have on your resume as a ton of industries now are producing and processing more data than ever. UX design is also a great one to get into, booming field and pretty interesting.

These are the kind of things that could get you a decent remote job at a tech company etc and could lead later down the road to lucrative freelance/consulting possibilities.

Google themselves are considering them equivalent to a college degree in their own hiring, and they will undoubtedly carry some weight because of the brand name. If you wanna do marketing do Google analytics and ads certificates too and you'll look just as good as someone with a marketing degree.

Check them out if you're looking for something productive to do

I think if you don't have any college degree, it's the best to make one of these basic certs and then start with a service desk job. After that, you can climb the career ladder (you shouldn't stay at a service desk job longer than 1-2 years).

Freelance jobs aren't that much money most of the time and they don't really build reputation for you, because companies can get college-educated people.

You can certainly try. The important thing for freelance work is having a portfolio, references from past clients, and hustling for clients. Ultimately though you need skill though, when you have that opportunities open up.

The best way to get skill is self education and work experience. Most successful freelancers had a job in the field first and contacts/portfolio of work to get off to a good start. If you are good at something like this though there will be huge demand.

Nowadays with remote work being the norm, loads of small tech startups looking for people to do shit like this - having a job for a while isn't that bad. As long as you are gaining skill and experience. These certs are just a great first step into a field.

Clients want a portfolio and references. But to get a portfolio and references, you need to have clients first. It's nearly impossible to start as a freelancer without having worked for a company before, which will give you a reference.

You can become a freelancer later, if you build your reputation at a company (or more than one). But first, you need to get in the field, and this is only possible with a "normal" job. Except if you're a genius and can show it with your repos at Github.

This is definitely true for software development as you say. And I agree that in the majority of cases it is very hard to start freelancing without a job first.

It is possible in some cases though. Like for example let's say I wanted to freelance in marketing analytics. First I choose a more specific niche that has high demand - ecommerce analytics. Then I teach myself the ins and outs of basic data analysis, Google analytics, reporting, the wider industry etc. At the same time I write blog posts and guides detailing what I'm learning or thinking. Next I get in touch with small eCommerce stores (preferably someone u know first) and offer them a free consultation. Offer some value to them, create actionable reports etc. In exchange they give you a testimonial/reference and you write up a case study to go on your site. After you have a few of these, some certs, and a small personal brand around the topics you are definitely hireable. Same reason that a blog can get you freelance writing work.

Ultimately people only care about references and portfolio because it is evidence that you are legit. If you can prove it some other way that is fine too.

the self taught market is getting very competitive now. doubt its the gold rush like before
