Woke up at 5:44 before my alarm again. I (6'6.25 WASP CL Nordid 7.1" wrists 3.2 CTP 23.5 yo) genuinely do not get groggy in the morning, never really have. Had Alfred press two shirts so I could pick depending on the light. Reviewed Asia overnight on the Bloomberg in my study while my chef did the eggs, we have a standing arrangement with a farm up in Vermont for those. Apartment is on the 61st floor of 220 CPS. Clear morning today, you could see into three states easy. Hard to explain what that does for you mentally but the subway crowd wouldn't get it anyway.
Office by 6:20. My senior analyst (6'3 WASP NW Europid solid brow ridge 7" wrists Princeton summa 23 yo) had the model done and sensitivities run which was good. Found one error in the depreciation schedule, one terminal growth rate assumption that was a bit rosy. Fixed both before Marco got my espresso to me. Marco is our barista, comes in at 5:45 just for our floor, very good at what he does.
London call at 6:50. My guy over there (6'4 Anglo-Saxon 6.9" wrists old Etonian 26 yo) is one of maybe four people in this whole industry I'd actually call a peer and I mean that. We got a cross-border logistics deal closed by 9:15, clean, no back and forth. The best execution always looks boring from the outside which is kind of the whole point.
Spent mid morning going through a healthcare rollup pitch. My associate (6'2 WASP decent canthal tilt Yale econ 22 yo) did fine work on the industry section honestly but the valuation narrative wasn't landing. Rewrote the exec summary myself in maybe eleven minutes standing up. Sent it back without making a thing of it. He'll get it eventually.
Lunch at The Grill with a client, inherited industrial money from the midwest, good guy, 54. He got the ribeye. I had the dover sole. Always the dover sole. Client clocked it without saying anything, they usually do.
Back by 1:30 and straight into calls. Six of them. MD (6'3 WASP silver at the temples Wharton old Greenwich 49 yo) floated my name for a board observer seat on one of our portfolio companies unprompted. I nodded once and we moved on. That's the correct response in this world.
Left at 6:05, Alfred was already on 48th by the time I got to the lobby. Small dinner at a townhouse on East 70th, old family, pre-revolution old in the real sense. Sat next to a woman from conservation at the Met. She asked good questions. Answered three properly and deflected the fourth. She was more interested after that than she would've been otherwise, predictably.
Home around 10. Went through a CIM for the morning, answered three emails, archived like forty others. Glass of Burgundy from my father's cellar, he sends a case up every quarter. Gibbon before bed. No alarm set, never is.
