I've analyzed this question by looking at various studies and reading women's responses on forums and here is my conclusion.

Light blonde (Boris Johnson, Owen Wilson): Failo
Dirty blonde (Paul Walker, Leo, Brad Pitt): Halo
Brown: Halo and the most widespread appeal for white women
Jet black: Failo
Red (unless auburn): Major catastrophic failo

However the rules also depend on a woman's coloring. For white women with blonde or light brown hair most have a major preference for darker hair on men. Many will even say they can't feel attracted to a man with blonde hair (lol at women calling men shallow, never seen a man say he can't be attracted to a woman based on hair color). However the darker a woman's hair color, the more likely she is to have a preference for blonde hair on men. The correlation is weaker than for blonde women but a subset of dark-haired white women have an extreme preference for blonde hair on men, like bordering on a fetish. For those women even light blonde hair can be a big halo. So there's some truth to opposites attract when it comes to hair color. So whether light/dark hair is a halo or failo also depends on the demographics of a place you're living.

This is an example of a woman on Reddit who says she prefers blonde hair on men, and notice she has dark hair and brown eyes. Blonde guys should approach white woman with dark features and forget about blonde woman.

Yes I'm not saying every dark-haired woman prefers light hair, but the darker their hair the more likely they have a preference for blonde hair. If 10% of men in an area are blonde and 90% of women have dark hair, and of those 20% have a preference for blonde men then blonde hair becomes a big halo. Dark-haired men would have a big advantage in areas where many women have light hair.

Brown hair has by far the most appeal to white woman but it's also based on numbers. If you go outside in any western country besides scandinavia almost every guy has brown hair, so it doesn't stand out.

A feature doesn't need to be rare to be attractive. Brown hair creates a nice contrast and humans like contrasting things. Light hair and especially eyebrows just look wrong

I'm not saying rare means attractive otherwise red would be the most attractive. Let's say 10% of males in an area are blonde, and 20% of women in that area have a strong preference for blonde hair. Then blonde is a big halo for those men. If 90% of men in an area have brown hair and 80% of women in that area prefer brown hair, then it's not an advantage to have brown hair.

He peaked in Plein Soleil when his hair ranged from almost dirty blond to brown.

Dark hair also looks nice but he needs whiter skin than in Plein Soleil
