A Guide to self-diagnosis for facial recession.
By Orka.

Not as high effort as the rest of my threads. But can be really useful for people having difficulty identifying where they're recessed.

Have you ever felt confident? Do you want to find out how you can feel like shit about your looks again? You're in the right place.
(Keep in mind, this guide was made for new users, to avoid them having to create posts asking about recession. A lot of the information in this thread is water)

1. Understanding Recession

Recession is pretty simple to identify if you've got a severe recession somewhere, but even a collection of minor recessions on your face can be the reason you see yourself as ugly. This guide is for you to identify the areas in which you're lacking, to help you plan or figure out what areas to target, and with what procedures.

You won't find solutions to your recession in this guide, this is to give you an idea of where you're recessed,
then with that information you can do individual research on how to fix it.

_____ _______________________ _____

2. How to Photograph Yourself Properly

Camera angles can distort the reality of some of your features, to avoid misdiagnosing yourself, try taking photos of yourself in the way demonstrated below.

1759591158351

To achieve this, I suggest putting your phone on a platform that's just below eye level, and recording a video, then going through the video and taking screenshots of the parts which look the most similar to the photos above. Try being at least 3 meters away from your camera & zooming in.

Try to get some frontal lighting to show your facial depth, this will be important for later.

_____ _______________________ _____

3. Frontal Analysis

Upper Eyelid Exposure
1759593907035

Caused by a recessed frontal bone or superior orbital rim, or by low orbital fat volume and thin upper eyelid skin.

Wide set eyes
1759593927828

Usually due to a narrow or recessed maxilla and zygomatic bones, or natural orbital spacing combined with weak soft-tissue fullness at the inner cheeks.

Thin Upper Lip
1759593946791

Can come from a recessed maxilla or alveolar ridge, or simply low fat and muscle volume in the upper lip region. (Usually a maxillary issue though)

Prominent Eyebags
1759593970521

Linked to a recessed infraorbital rim, maxilla, or weak zygomatic projection, but can also be caused by low midface fat, and poor skin elasticity.

Narrow Jaw / Narrow Face / "Horseface"/Long Midface
1759594098460

Often due to recessed zygomatic bones, flat maxilla, or mandible with downward growth.

Outwards facing ears
1759595975487

Sometimes from narrow zygomatic arches or temporal bone width, but more often just due to natural cartilage shape or minimal cheek soft-tissue projection.
get otoplasty it'll ascend you like instantly lol
_____ _______________________ _____

4. Side Analysis

Chin sits behind lips
1759596505658

Due to a recessed mandible or mental region, but can also appear that way from full lips or short pogonion soft tissue.

Jaw goes 'too far downwards'
1759596613776

Caused by downward-grown or recessed mandible, usually with a recessed maxilla, also worsened by low soft-tissue tension and weak gonial mass.

Flat Face
1759596637001

Recessed maxilla, always.

Nose Bump
1759596660628
1759596672558

Appears when the maxilla and nasal bones are recessed, maxillary recession is almost always paired with a nose bump (left).
Example on the right is purely genetic though, left isn't.

I obviously don't think this will completely erase frauds from the community

Almost always leads to someone coping
People will cope regardless. If they're serious about improving their looks they'll internalize this, if not, they won't.

barely any co-relation
hump is caused by nose cartilage
There is some correlation, in myself and others I noticed with a similar nose to mine, and some studies have been made.
But it can be their maxilla or just their cartilage, there's still a section to check if your maxilla is recessed :feelsokman:

the purpose of this is for them to take neutral pics, since they aren't meant to impress anybody.

it really helps no one, It's not about fraud & utter cope but it's actually very hard to get accurate measurements that way.
Even I won't be be able to measure correctly with that method.
It will almost always lead to misdiagnosis.

only good way to measure side recession =
facial depth + convexity angle + E plane

not some random as line you draw from forehead to chin

2. How to Photograph Yourself Properly

Camera angles can distort the reality of some of your features, to avoid misdiagnosing yourself, try taking photos of yourself in the way demonstrated below.

3. Frontal Analysis

Upper Eyelid Exposure
View attachment 4174105
Caused by a recessed frontal bone or superior orbital rim, or by low orbital fat volume and thin upper eyelid skin.

Wide set eyes
View attachment 4174106
Usually due to a narrow or recessed maxilla and zygomatic bones, or natural orbital spacing combined with weak soft-tissue fullness at the inner cheeks.

Thin Upper Lip
View attachment 4174110
Can come from a recessed maxilla or alveolar ridge, or simply low fat and muscle volume in the upper lip region. (Usually a maxillary issue though)

Prominent Eyebags
View attachment 4174111
Linked to a recessed infraorbital rim, maxilla, or weak zygomatic projection, but can also be caused by low midface fat, and poor skin elasticity.

Narrow Jaw / Narrow Face / "Horseface"/Long Midface
View attachment 4174114
Often due to recessed zygomatic bones, flat maxilla, or mandible with downward growth.

Outwards facing ears
View attachment 4174175
Sometimes from narrow zygomatic arches or temporal bone width, but more often just due to natural cartilage shape or minimal cheek soft-tissue projection.
get otoplasty it'll ascend you like instantly lol

4. Side Analysis

Chin sits behind lips
View attachment 4174204
Due to a recessed mandible or mental region, but can also appear that way from full lips or short pogonion soft tissue.

Jaw goes 'too far downwards'
View attachment 4174210
Caused by downward-grown or recessed mandible, usually with a recessed maxilla, also worsened by low soft-tissue tension and weak gonial mass.

Flat Face
View attachment 4174211
Recessed maxilla, always.

Nose Bump
View attachment 4174214View attachment 4174216
Appears when the maxilla and nasal bones are recessed, maxillary recession is almost always paired with a nose bump (left).
Example on the right is purely genetic though, left isn't.

Thin upper lip on white people is just a standard trait. Plenty of white male actors etc that women thirst over have thin upper lips but good bone structure.
