Unless you have been living under a rock, you have probably noticed that AI written fiction is becoming increasingly commonplace, making it harder than ever for human writers to get noticed. Some even predict that AI will make writers obsolete. I disagree with that notion and believe human created works will continue to be relevant, but only within certain genres and for specific aims.
Let’s just rip the bandage off and get this out of the way: generic fiction genres such as fantasy, romance, and erotica will almost certainly be replaced by AI. The usual criticisms of AI writing, that it is generic or uninspired, are largely irrelevant for these genres because many readers do not expect or even want them to be groundbreaking. They simply want their fix. If an AI can create something like a customized isekai portal fantasy, a genre already known for being derivative, tailored exactly to their preferences, they likely will not care that it was written by AI. Fiction intended purely for mass consumption may largely disappear in its current form because AI will generate most of it.
However, what humans can do that AI cannot is exchange ideas and share vision and intention. Sometimes writers want to make a point or write a story with deeper meaning rather than merely providing escapist entertainment. That type of story will remain relevant because their readers are looking for something deeper than just a quick dopamine hit. In that sense, human written fiction will just evolve to become more niche, appealing to a smaller group of readers who value philosophical or conceptual depth.
This wouldn't be so bad, honestly. The 'normies' will just go away and read their AI smut while the rest of us get to have the space all for ourselves.
