It depends whether you want to do a strength or hypertrophy workout. For most people here I would recommend the latter.

Do both.

Start with heavy compound 1-5 rep range

Then do 8-10 rep range.

why is it effective? 8 reps is a combination of type 2 and type 1 fibers, in the first reps you will be using type 2, your muscles start to fatigue and you use more type 1 fibers, its the best of both worlds
 
It's more about maintaining a certain threshold of intensity for a certain time under tension to elicit a stress response. More volume beyond that does nothing and can be counterproductive. When volume gets very high it necessitates such a large drop in intensity that fast twitch fibers aren't even needed anymore; the body can just cycle through slow twitch fibers like it does for endurance exercise.
