The term Hinduism isn't accurate.

The word Hindu is derived from Sindu Mountains and this refers only to location.

A better way of saying this would be Sanatana Dharma.

The word Dharma has no exact English translation.

As Wikipedia says,

Hinduism includes a diversity of ideas on spirituality and traditions, but has no ecclesiastical order, no unquestionable religious authorities, no governing body, no prophet(s) nor any binding holy book; Hindus can choose to be polytheistic, pantheistic, panentheistic, pandeistic, henotheistic, monotheistic, monistic, agnostic, atheistic or humanist.[61][62][63] According to Doniger, "ideas about all the major issues of faith and lifestyle – vegetarianism, nonviolence, belief in rebirth, even caste – are subjects of debate, not dogma."

Different sects of the religion have different religious practices.

I belong to a sect that was partially influenced by Islam. We bury our dead (other Hindus cremate their dead). And we don't eat pork, beef and also believe in the existence of djinns.

Sanatan Dharma is the oldest religion on this planet, and as such has many old religious traditions that are no longer practiced. The Puranas that you refer to are one of many other religious texts that embody the richness of this religion.

To get a good understanding of this religion, please read the Bhagavad Gita. It is the soul of this religion and has all the essential concepts of this religion.
