How long does it take for my hair to go through its awkward phase where it looks like a bush/helmet?

I have curly hair and intend to let it grow into a skater boy style like that of the guy in my picture. I know it starts hanging after gaining more weight. I have never done this because I did not know my hair has the potential to grow down.

normal on curls, there is a akward phase but after you pass it you get it, just use a bonnet or something to cover your hair
