How Often Should I Redye Hair?

If I were to dye my hair, obviously as it grows the roots will be my natural color. How long would it take for my natural color at the roots to be visible? Hair grows at an average .5 inch (1.25cm) per month.

What hair color is ideal? I have dark brown
