I didn’t mean to say that a depressed person who’s been raped multiple times can have a really good life just because they try to be optimistic. Sure, they can maybe try, and make their life slightly better, but this thread applies to people with lighter issues.I believe happiness and sadness exist and can be felt by everyone, but the baseline emotion of someone ‘depressed’ would be that of misery, their only ‘happiness’ being fleeting and forced, inevitably returning to that baseline misery built in through the countless moments of negative reinforcement throughout their life (= depression).
Acting as if that constant built up psychological damage can be willingly undone by just choosing to be happy is ridiculous. Like I said previously about trauma, you can’t just tell shell shocked troops to forget about their what they’ve seen in the war, because their experiences have been ingrained in them, they carry them everywhere, much like someone with depression.
