I know the study you're talking about. It was absolute dogshit that doesn't prove anything. The study wasn't specific enough. The guys weren't literally sitting on their couch doing nothing. All of them had some sort of job (wasn't specified in the study), and it might've been labor intensive. So yes, even the guys who "sat on their couch all day" had some sort of stimuli to which their muscles responded to, of course, more because they were on roids. The study just didn't track all their activities.
