1. Figure out your trigger
Most people don’t do it randomly — it’s usually tied to one of:
- boredom
- stress
- loneliness
- bedtime habit
- scrolling certain content
For a few days, notice when the urge hits. That tells you what to change.
2. Make the habit harder to start
Small friction matters:
- keep phone away from bed
- avoid being alone in the exact place/time you usually do it
- install content blockers if porn is part of the loop (e.g. Cold Turkey or Freedom)
- don’t stay up aimlessly late — that’s a common trigger window
3. Replace the moment, not just the behavior
When the urge hits, have a default move:
- 20 push-ups
- cold shower
- walk outside
- text a friend
- start a game/book/work task immediately
The goal is to interrupt the “urge → automatic action” chain.
4. Don’t make it a giant identity battle
Thinking “I can never do this again” often backfires. Better:
- “I’m going 7 days.”
- then 14
- then 30
Track streaks, but don’t treat one slip as failure.
5. Reduce the strongest trigger
If porn is involved, that’s often the biggest lever. Cutting porn often reduces the urge more than trying to stop everything at once.
6. Fix the root issue
A lot of compulsive habits are covering something else:
- stress
- anxiety
- feeling stuck
- not enough social connection
- lack of structure
If those improve, the habit often weakens naturally.
A simple starting plan
For the next week:
- no phone in bed
- sleep at a consistent time
- exercise daily (even 20 min)
- when urge hits: leave the room immediately and do one preset action
- avoid the media/content that usually starts it
