Everything you need to know about shooting with zero lens distortion.
DISTANCE AND ZOOM
Don't walk up to your subject, stay back and zoom in instead. The further you are, the less distortion you get. On your phone use 2x or 3x instead of 1x. Wide angle bends faces, buildings, everything.
FOCAL LENGTH
24mm and below — heavy distortion, avoid it
35mm — slight distortion, acceptable for street
50mm — closest to the human eye, almost zero distortion
85mm — portrait standard, looks clean
135mm and above — compression effect, facial features flatten out naturally
FOR PHONE USERS
Main camera is usually around 26mm, not terrible but not ideal. 2x lens gets you to roughly 52mm which is the sweet spot for portraits. Use 3x and above for architecture or distant subjects. Never use ultrawide for people, only for landscapes.
CAMERA ANGLE
Keep the camera at eye level with your subject, not above, not below. Shooting from below stretches legs but shrinks the head. Shooting from above enlarges the head and shrinks the body. Eye level always gives the most natural result.
FRAMING
Place your subject in the center of the frame. Objects near the edges always distort more. Especially on wide angle, edge distortion is basically unavoidable.
POST PROCESSING
In Lightroom open lens correction, enable profile corrections, drag the distortion slider to the right. In Snapseed use the perspective tool. If lines look curved use the transform tool to fix it. Snapseed is enough for phone photos, Lightroom gives more precise results on desktop.
