"Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), occasionally still called dysmorphophobia, is a mental disorder characterized by the obsessive idea that some aspect of one's own body part or appearance is severely flawed and therefore warrants exceptional measures to hide or fix it. In BDD's delusional variant, the flaw is imagined. If the flaw is actual, its importance is severely exaggerated"

I actually feel therapists and psychologists are grossly gaslighting their patients by labelling this as a mental disorder and stating that certain faults are "imagined" or "Severely exaggerated". I feel its your subconscious telling you that you have an unattractive trait that needs to be fixed or your social standing/survival will be jeopardised.
Your mind is completely aware of the importance of your looks in society, its funny how BDD is mostly in the "facial" region. Which is in line that face= everything.
You fix the fault to a standard that your mind is happy with, BDD dissapears.
