I had the most terrifying experience of my life last night. I woke up gasping for air, completely choking, and feeling like I was literally drowning in my sleep. My heart was racing like crazy and it took me a minute to fully catch my breath.
To be fair, I currently have a brutal cold and my nose is completely blocked, but I know this isn't just a standard cold issue. I’ve been sleeping for over 8+ hours lately and waking up absolutely exhausted, like I haven't slept a single minute.
I have a narrow palate and a recessed jaw, so my airway is already physically compromised. I’m pretty sure the inflammation from the cold just completely shut down the tiny breathing space I have left when I fell asleep. My tongue probably collapsed into my throat and blocked everything.
I was already looking into MARPE (Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion) to fix my narrow maxilla, but after last night, this just went from a functional/aesthetic goal to a straight-up survival necessity.
Has anyone here with a recessed jaw/narrow palate experienced this? Did getting MARPE or bimax surgery completely cure your sleep quality? I'm honestly terrified of going to sleep tonight.
