When I was younger, I didn't get it either. My best friend in HS was a weeaboo, my history teacher was a weeaboo who went to Japan every year but I didn't get it. Then one day as a college dropout, I decided to watch Japanese horror movies and quickly realized that they mogged the fuck out of American horror movies and other western horror movies. At the end of Japanese movies, they add pop songs so that is how I slowly got into J-pop, it was pretty funny to hear a J-pop song during the after credits of a horror movie. Now I like Japan but I would not visit it as it's too far away, I cannot deal with 12+ hour long-haul flights. One of my best friends has gone to Japan a few times as well.
