I scored an 8.5/10 on the national exam despite philosophy being a two-year subject. I thought that would translate into a B+, but it’s actually an A+. :RainbowDance:

What makes it even more remarkable is that it was a two-year subject that I took in one year only, so I was already way behind.

It’s no surprise my first grade was a 4/10, or an F; because I had no idea what was expected of me. However, I understood what I did wrong and learned from that; my second and third grades were 7/10, or B+. Then I aced the final exam, which was the national exam.

I’m just looking at this chart that converts Dutch grades into American grades, hence this thread. :HmmNotes:

I also scored an A last semester in college. No wonder I was accused of using ChatGPT when I didn’t. It was for an essay. :RainbowDance:

Mirin, personally I'm taking back 2 classes I failed (French and Economics) for my last session of college and it makes my days super busy and exhausting since I have to wake up at 6 AM everyday

Hey bhai, nice to see you here as well.

I only had those subjects in high school, and honestly I sucked at economics especially. I was only getting Fs, but miraculously I scored a C on my national exam.

As for French, I was ok with it but I didn’t like the subject. I dropped both German and French as soon as I was able to.

I can relate to that feeling, by the way. In early 2024 until mid 2024, I studied in another city and I had to travel 2+ hours to get there, and 2+ hours to get back. This meant I had to wake up at 5:30 AM.

Yes, since starting college in 2016, I always dropped out before finishing the first semester. I also constantly changed my major. I probably have the record for most dropouts and changing of majors. :KEKLEO:

I’ve mainly been doing observing these first few weeks; I felt it was weird to suddenly act like a teacher. My cooperating teacher wanted me to teach something ASAP, but I told them my college says it has to be done in the later weeks. Even the outlines of the college guide say the first weeks should be observations only. Next week, I’ll be more actively involved. I mainly sit at the back of the classroom because I don’t wanna weird out the students, since they’re 7th graders. In the United States, they would be considered middle school students, but we don’t have the concept of a middle school here. After elementary school, high school starts, so these are high school freshmen I’ve been dealing with so far. But my cooperating teacher plans to show me their 9th grade class as well, apparently they’re a pain in the ass.

Why is that, don’t you study? If you’re in the United States, which I assume you are, aren’t you allowed to go into the next grade anyway, regardless of what you score? That’s what I see American teachers complaining about constantly. Such an easy thing, if you ask me. In the Netherlands, they’re strict. If you fail your classes, you have to repeat the entire grade. If you fail your classes twice, you’re kicked out of the school.

I’m comparing the Dutch grade to the US letter grade. Here’s the full overview:

10A+4.0
9A+4.0
8.5 A+4.0
8A4.0
7.5A-3.7
7B+3.3
6.5B3.0
6B- / C1.7 - 2.7
5.5D1
5F0

The last column is the GPA. In The Netherlands, you need a 5.5 to get a passing grade, so basically just a D. If you get a 5.4, you fail. Those are the worst grades you can get, because you’re so close to passing but instead, you fail.

What does the Chinese grading system look like?

Oops, I forgot to add 9.5, but that’s also an A+ and 4.0 as GPA (I added it manually, instead of copying and pasting).

That makes sense. I mean, why put in effort if the system is designed in such a way that it makes no difference whether you pass or fail? I would do the same thing as you had I been a student there.

Thank you bhai! I switched biology for philosophy because I didn’t feel like retaking the biology national exam (which I passed, but it was just a 5.5, the bare minimum to pass). Are you still in school or do you work?

Because I just got the 4x ratio trophy meaning I can finally post, and I've grown a bit tired of .com, there's not much going on here and the threads are mostly trash not worth interacting with. I'm also unsatisfied with how Dean is handling the Nate situation by keeping him unbanned even after all the shit he's done. I'm not saying I'm completely switching from com to org but I'll be much more active here.

Dutch people don’t necessarily hate immigrants; they hate immigrants not assimilating, or when they act like dickheads (which happens a lot, so I can’t blame them for hating us). The Dutch used to be very friendly towards immigrants, but that’s changed. Oh, and they also hate it when the government prioritizes immigrants or refugees over Dutch people.

Dean is way too forgiving for his own good. I haven’t really followed the situation with Nate, I kind of try stay far away from all the .com drama. Guess I’m just too old for it. But in any case, it’s nice to see you’ll be more active here. .com is very boring compared to this forum, but that’s probably because it’s a small group of users creating thread. Anyhoo… yeah, the Netherlands is a small country, but you don’t need a car to get to places.

Are you in high school or in college? Honestly, the subjects I have now rely less on studying in a traditional way. In my previous semester, only one exam relied on traditional studying, which was grammar. My other assignments were essays, presentations and video essays. Oh, and an oral exam as well.

Fair enough! You gotta do what works for you. Honestly, I’m not entrepreneurial or whatever, I prefer working under someone rather than having my own business or being into trading. Personally, I don’t care much for money. I just want enough to pay the bills.

Yes, that’s correct. How is it in Finland? You need a 5.5 to pass. I remember in the past it was 5, but that was before I started high school. My best friend managed to get his teacher to change his 5.4 to a 5.5 so that he could graduate. It’s not allowed but the teacher made an exception for my best friend. This was years ago, back in high school.
