You can look at a dog or an anime character and instantly your brain understands them to not be human. You don't view objects or non human things as ugly because your brain puts no significant importance on these patterns.
Viewing a face as ugly happens when a face looks human but doesn't quite make the cut. This effect is known as the uncanny valley effect. As CGI got better animation studios ran into issues the realer the characters became the more disturbed people are. Thats because as we start comparing it to other humans and the pattern registers in our brain every small flaw stands out like shit in the side walk.
