Participants were shown headshots of opposing political candidates in U.S. Senate and House races (from 2000, 2002, and 2004) for one second or less. Any races where a participant actually recognized a candidate were thrown out to isolate facial appearance.
Based purely on rapid, unreflective ratings of who looked more "competent," participants correctly predicted the actual winner in ~70% of Senate races and ~67% of House races.
