Malian school children were given several intelligence tests.

The ones in questions being ravens progressive matrices, wood cock Johnson, and a third test which measures practical and social intelligence.

Ravens progressive matrices consists of several pattern recognition problems involving shapes the children scored a measly 66 in terms of iq when converting the raw score to iq

Compared to western norms ofc. But here where things got interesting. On the WJ III when converting the raw scores to iq the children scored 106 when compared to western norms.

The WJ consists of measuring academic achievement in writing and math while the RPM measures shape pattern recognition.

Since this study was done on school children they’d be familiar with reading and math and would score well on the WJ but Malian school children don’t spend time playing with shapes and puzzles like western school children that’s a luxury

Which could be why they score worse on the rpm

For the practical and social test they scored 106 to 114 compared to western norms
