Reza knew he was losing Shirin the night she stopped looking at him across the tea table at Café Naderi.

For three years, their world had been built on shared quiet: long walks down Valiasr Street under the arching plane trees, arguing over Forough Farrokhzad’s poetry, and late-night drives through the winding hills of Darband. Reza was a man of tangible things. He liked the smell of old paper, the heat of fresh sangak bread, and the reassuring weight of Shirin’s hand in his.

Then came the new guy.

His name was Farhad, but Shirin barely called him that. To everyone, he was simply the gamer.

Reza didn't understand the pull. The gamer didn't write her notes or bring her sour cherries from the bazaar. He lived behind a closed door in an apartment in northern Tehran, surrounded by the hum of cooling fans and the glowing light of dual monitors. While Reza spent his afternoons navigating the chaotic traffic and heat of the city just to see her for an hour, the gamer was always just a click away, existing in a fast, electric world that Reza couldn't touch.

At first, it was subtle. Shirin would check her phone mid-conversation, her thumb flying across the screen with a sudden, anxious urgency.

"Is everything okay?" Reza had asked one evening, watching the blue light flicker against her dark eyes.

"It's just the group," she said, her voice distant. "The gamer needs me online."

Reza didn't push. He assumed it was a passing distraction, a phase that would fade like Tehran’s seasonal smog. But the gamer didn't fade; he expanded. He became the voice in her headphones while she cooked, the message that woke her up at dawn, and the reason she started canceling their Fridays together. Whenever Reza asked what made him so compelling, Shirin could never quite explain it. She just spoke about him with a kind of quiet awe, as if the gamer operated on a completely different wavelength than the rest of the world.

The final break came on a cool autumn afternoon. Reza was waiting outside her building, holding two hot cups of Turkish coffee. When Shirin finally came down the stairs, she didn't have her coat on.

She stood on the marble doorstep, looking at him not with anger, but with a strange, heavy sadness.

"You're not coming out today, are you?" Reza asked, the warm cup growing cold in his grip.

Shirin shook her head softly. "He's waiting for me, Reza."

"The gamer?"

"Yes."

"Shirin, he lives behind a screen," Reza said, his voice straining against the quiet of the alley. "I'm right here. I'm standing in front of you."

"I know," she murmured, taking a small step backward toward the dark lobby. "But when I'm with him, everything moves so fast. With you... we're just waiting."

She didn't wait for his reply. The heavy iron door clicked shut, leaving Reza alone on the quiet pavement.

He walked down Valiasr alone that night, the autumn leaves crunching beneath his boots. The city was full of traffic, noise, and people rushing home, but to Reza, Tehran felt completely emptied out—left behind in the quiet while Shirin disappeared into the glow of another world
