First, answer, then click the spoiler.
Many people find this a difficult subject to answer because they know people who repeatedly make poor decisions and act immorally as addicts. When seen in this perspective, it might not seem like an illness because some people view the designation as a justification for inappropriate behavior. Addiction, on the other hand, meets the description of a disease, disease is defined as a dysfunction of an organ in the body.
The brain, more especially the frontal cortex (which controls thought) and the midbrain (which is linked to desire), is the sick organ in addiction. Because of the way these regions interact, diseases affecting the desire center causes cravings for inappropriate items, which can lead to thinking disorders that cause the reasoning half of the brain to make bad decisions. Thus, in my opinion, addiction is a disease that primarily affects the brain and desire.
