It’s basically a good survival instinct. Instead of being brave (dumb) you are cowardly and therefore you are more safe and less likely to be hurt.

How come cowardice and fear aren’t looked at as strengths? They are very good self preservation skills

Yup.

But imagine in the caveman days;

A group of hunters goes out to kill the behemoth. They all battle it and the one cowardly guy hides away behind a rock. He watches as all the hunters get killed by the beast. He is the only survivor. The beast is weak after the battle and collapses. Then the cowardly hunter finishes it off and takes the meat and brings it home and fucks the wives of all the dead hunters.

Winner?

I often fantasize about this type of scenario. Imagine deserting from an army or leaving your friends in a bar fight and getting away with it. Must feel extremely good. I don't think I've ever displayed courage in my life, it equals being a useful idiot for someone else.

Yes, it’s better if you care about longevity.

My brother was classmates with a guy who tried to break up a fight in a club and he got punched, fell to the ground, hit his head and died.

If he was “a coward” he would have been alive still.

Sad shit.

That is real life though. Once upon a time there was a group of hunters with one coward and they all went hunting and died except for the coward. This is a fact

You know, my outlook in life has always been to get the best result with as little work as possible. So this is a complete victory.
Everyday since I have born, I became better at doing nothing, making it look like I did something, and taking credit.

That's life. And I would say any result where you get the same result or better result than everyone else, but do less work, is the best. So it's not about cowardice for me. It's about being lazy.

Jews always had a reputation for being "cowards" back in the old days in Europe - they avoided fights if they were bullied, they didn't oppose resistance to robbers or thieves, they avoided military service, etc...
Many people despised them specifically for this and assumed that since they didn't put a fight, they might instead plan or do evil things sneakily, as revenge, behind others people back, so all sorts of conspiracy theories appeared about them.

It depends, you can be a based coward or a cringe coward

In that case Maybe deep inside my bloodline I descend from the most Jewish of all Jews

Being a coward will make your life hell, being scared of everything will turn even the most normal daily things into a nightmare for you, so no, it’s the worst trait one can have

There’s a difference between bravery and stupidity. He was just naive, not brave.

That may be so, but a “coward” would have stayed out of it. Poor guy.

don't see another factor except getting away with it vs being punished by the society (in any way, depending of the severity of what you've done)

on the hero extreme, it's also about getting rewarded for your act or getting nothing except some moral sense of satisfaction for it (i don't even think this would qualify as "moral", though, it's value-neutral)

Yes yes.

As you said, a group of hunters goes hunting, they get wrecked by the beast, coward hiding behind a rock, beast is slain and only one brave chad remains, but injured.

What should the coward do?

Take a stone and kill the witness and competition.

Fake it till you make it type of shit.

I think a man being protective and risking his life in certain situations, especially for women is a hard instinct to overcome. It's viewed as cowardly but honestly, it's your life that's on the line. And for what? Some random bitch?
