Definitely placebo. Even if mewing works it would take many years for changes to occur

Its not cope. It just cannot undo the deformation thats already done.If it was that way we would see tons of people who fixed their long midface or recession. It will prevent it from getting worse though and thats why you should practice ''normal'' mewing. Afterall thats the natural thing to do, even babies do it on their own naturally unless they have some sort of problem like allergies that cause mouthbreating. Any amount of extereme pressure won't do anything other than putting unnecessary strain on related muscles.
