I know that this area of the face is quite risky to perform on and that it can look very uncanny if done badly, but nevertheless is there a difference between these 2 things?

I
it's the shape of the implant, you want your gonion to be outward to make it pop out the masseter.
Most surgerons don't know about this and they only add mass wich often results bloated or uncanny.

The real difficulty is that flared gonion isn't an universal design, it really depends on each individual.
if too sharp it's gonna be "implant reveal" and even injure your soft tissues
if too smooth it's not gonna to a thing

so it's really hard to deal with.
