Is there any circumstance where a mandible expansion appliance would descend me

I went to my ortho and he said ill be getting braces soon, but said i was going to need an extraction since theres not enough space to pull one of my molars back into place. I said absolutely not and asked for any other fixes and he mentioned some appliance ( forgot the name) that makes more space in the lower jaw to then ultimately pull the molar back into place blah blah. Basically just wanted to know it theres anything i should look into etc to make sure i wont get fucked with this
